A Warrior’s Burden – Horde Side RP BfA Reply to Alternative Chat

It seems like a large portion of the Warcraft community is united in the thought that the upcoming war between the Horde and Alliance is unwanted. Alternative Chat just wrote her own RP story in order to make sense of it. There were some comments about writing a Horde side response, so I thought I’d give it a shot.

The factions have just finished being united to push back against the Legion, and Azeroth won, although we paid dearly on both sides. Not only does this war seem like a huge step backwards, it feels like it comes out of nowhere. The Alliance and the Horde should be closer than ever, not watching each other from across a battlefield.

Regardless, that’s where we’re headed, but it doesn’t mean our characters have to participate enthusiastically. This is my warrior’s story.

After a night of recovery in Dalaran, I am awakened by a summons from my Warchief.

“Time is not a luxury we possess, but I respect your desire to know more. THIS has forever altered the balance of power in Azeroth. Deposits of Azerite are being located across the world, Themyscira. Though we do not yet understand its full potential, it is clear that this substance has vast destructive capability. What will war look like in twenty years? In a hundred? How can the Horde hope to defend its borders if the Alliance controls the flow of Azerite?”

“For the sake of the Horde’s future, we must be the first to act. By occupying Darnassus, we will control the flow of Azerite and ensure it cannot be used against us. The Alliance will dare not attack its own city for fear of harming civilians. With a single stroke, we will guarantee generations of peace.”

She mentions killing one of the Alliance’s leaders, and while this is troubling to say the least, I can’t disagree with the thought that Azerite might be a worrisome commodity between our two factions. My sister, Aedaria, remembers the War of the Shifting Sands and the divisiveness over the gathering of war materials. While I’m a warrior and she an assassin, I had thought we were headed towards peace on Azeroth, not more war.

Lady Sylvanas has always been a shining example of surviving in the face of adversity. To me, she was a figure to be admired, someone that took the worst hand dealt to her and became the best she could be. Led her people into prosperity when others would mock and revile us. But now I feel betrayed. The actions she is taking are not the ones I recognize as being in her innate character. What is driving her?

Some say vengeance, some say fear, even others say she’s come unhinged. I wonder if there’s something more. But for now, I must do as she wishes… to a point. I unwittingly played a part in her scheme to burn the world tree and I am ashamed. I stand with Saurfang and believe that letting Malfurion go was the correct course of action. But no more.

I will collect Azerite. I will amass resources to help our cause. But I will not take arms up against the Alliance. There will be no truce between us after these dark days – of that I am sure, but I will be no party to war. Rebuild. Restructure. Reinvest. And I wait. I wait for peace. Peace again. We require a common enemy. I am afraid that common enemy may just be my hero.
